  • Urban Harvest Permaculture Design Certification: Permaculture is an ecologically inspired, energy conscious way to design living arrangements that are sustainable.
    Our 100-hour certification program is composed of five modules during the school year and a Design Project Showcase in May 2025. Our program is unique in that there are students who are beginning and midway through the program to build and overlap Permaculture Fellows for community connections and networking.

    2025-2026 Permaculture Design Certification
    Unit 1: Sustainable Living through Permaculture 1 & 2
    Introductions! We introduce Permaculture Ethics and Principals. Topics covered: history, ethics and principles, patterns used in design, nutrition, and natural materials construction and more. Time: 1pm -5pm. Location: Trees for Houston, 1911 34th Street, 77018. Sept 28, 2025.
    Sustainable Living through Permaculture 2
    Through a tour of the remodeled home and food gardens, participants will be shown how these principles of permaculture design are applied in real living situations. Location: A South West Houston residence & gardens. Oct 5th is 2pm -6pm. (NOT 1m -5pm)

    Fall Unit 2: Designing Bountiful Gardens through Permaculture
    Focuses on the design of family gardens in a community context as part of a home place, farm or ranch. Learn the permaculture principles applied to a whole systems thinking approach to the design of vegetables gardens, fruit orchards, domestic animals and the factors used to maximize production and minimize labor.     Winter Unit 3: Designing Green Homes and Communities through Permaculture: In a world of rapidly rising energy and materials prices along with increasing climate protection measures, it is essential that our homes and communities adopt conservation measures which will be explored. Sun Feb 8, 15, 22. March 1, 15, 22, 2025● 1:00pm -5:00pm. Location: 1911 34th St. 77018 & Two Field Site Visits, All Day

    Spring Unit 5: Restoring Nature through Permaculture
    This Unit focuses on basic ecology principles and local ecological challenges. It will also address broader questions about our natural environment including trees, forests, plants and animals, including current threats to a healthy ecosystem. Followed by a guided design process and implementation day. Sun March 29, April 12, 19*, 27* 2025 ● 1-5pm

    Spring Unit 5: Design Tutorial and Final Project Design
    Independent study devoted to a capstone design project on your own and paired with a Permaculture mentor. Participants present a Final Project on Presentation Day: Sun May 17th, 2026 ● 11-5pm. Trees for Houston, 1911 34th Street, 77018

    Cost: $1,500
    Scholarships/Work-study Available for Partial and Full Scholarships. Work-study Exchange. Prioritizing: Individuals in the City of Houston who live and serve public community projects which restore nature, opportunities for food gardening and education to develop a thriving sustainable community. ORGANIC GARDENING & NUTRITION EDUCATION
Urban Harvest Classes teach and promote the benefits of organic gardening, ecological land management, and healthy food choices. In schools, our Garden Educators teach children about nature and the origins of their food through hands-on, experiential learning. 

HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS
Through Double Up Houston, Urban Harvest is making fresh, healthy food accessible and affordable for all. Double Up Houston provides SNAP (formerly food stamps) beneficiaries with double the amount of fresh produce for every dollar spent at markets and farm stands across Houston.

COMMUNITY GARDENS
With a network of over 140 edible gardens throughout the Greater Houston area, it's easy to get involved in a garden near you. Urban Harvest provides affiliate gardens with volunteer engagement and workdays; seed and plant distributions; and, free education opportunities to help each garden become long-lasting and well-established for the community it serves.
