Is it safe? Did you know that sunflowers are a phytoremediator and uptake heavy metals such as lead and cadmium?! In urban areas soil contamination through local industries and past practices have resulted in exposure of the land to lead, volatile organic compounds, and creosote. To grow healthy food and safe green spaces for our children, we are incorporating Permaculture Design principals and techniques to remediate the soil through Bioremediation techniques.
At Cane Rivers Garden, Carol Burton and environmental activist, Ginger Jeudy, we will share the techniques of Bioremediation and earth repair through three different methods followed by hands-on experiential service learning of applying the techniques. At this site, soil collection for testing will be conducted for before and after implementation results comparison over time.
3 types of Bioremediation:
micro-remediation is bacterial remediation through the soil web. Sheet mulching with compost and wood chips.
myco-remediation, fungus.
phyto-remediation through plants. We will share a plant list of phytoremediators and how these techniques will be implemented in to restore the gardens of Cane River.
The techniques are ideal for grass roots activists, backyard gardeners, and community garden leaders in how to use and apply these techniques.
